A MEMORIAL

DECLARING MARCH 5, 2025 "SOIL AND WATER CONSERVATION DISTRICT DAY" IN THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES.

 

     WHEREAS, forty-seven soil and water conservation districts are political subdivisions of state, enumerated in Chapter 73 NMSA 1978 as a local government body to improve the natural resources of New Mexico; and

     WHEREAS, the soil and water conservation districts promote responsible management and conservation on all lands working with local, state, federal and tribal land management agencies; and  

     WHEREAS, the members serving on the conservation district boards are elected by registered voters within their conservation districts through the provisions of the Local Election Act; and

     WHEREAS, each year, soil and water conservation districts work with leaders in agriculture, environment, education and other industries to assist with voluntary, incentive-driven programs that benefit New Mexico; and

     WHEREAS, soil and water conservation districts in New Mexico are the local delivery system for much of the forest thinning projects; and

     WHEREAS, soil and water conservation districts work directly with landowners to assist with restoration and rehabilitation from forest fires; and

     WHEREAS, soil and water conservation districts are the local delivery system for riparian restoration projects and noxious weed control; and

     WHEREAS, the forty-seven soil and water conservation districts work directly with landowners to improve the soils in New Mexico through implementation of the provisions of the Healthy Soil Act; and

     WHEREAS, soil and water conservation districts work with landowners and land management agencies to improve wildlife habitat in New Mexico; and

     WHEREAS, soil and water conservation districts work very closely with acequias to update and improve their water delivery systems; and

     WHEREAS, soil and water conservation districts manage watershed restoration projects to improve water quality and vegetation diversity;

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that March 5, 2025 be proclaimed "Soil and Water Conservation District Day" in the house of representatives; and

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this memorial be transmitted to the New Mexico association of conservation districts.
